Acute Care Common Stem (ACCS)

The Oxford School of Anaesthesia has worked together with the Oxford School of Emergency Medicine and the Programme Director for Acute Medicine to develop a large Acute Common Stem Training Programme within the Oxford School of Medicine.

This presents an exciting opportunity for trainees to gain a broad based experience in several aspects of critical care prior to entering their preferred specialty. The rotations are of 2 years duration and will be based in Trusts within the Oxford Deanery. One year will be divided between Emergency Medicine and Acute Medicine, and the other year will be spent with a minimum of three months Intensive Care Medicine experience and up to nine months of training in Anaesthetics.

The ACCS programme in Oxford involves a total of 12 rotations per year. Of these, 4 are badged as ACCS/Anaesthesia and enter ST2 Anaesthesia at the end of their 2 years on the ACCS program. At the end of the anaesthesia ST2 year they will have 2 years experience of Anaesthesia (including 3 months ICM) and one year of Acute Medicine/Emergency. This allows them to be competitive for ST3 entry. The programme also satisfies basic and complimentary training requirements for those wishing to pursue a joint CCT in Intensive Care Medicine within their primary specialty.
