Pain Management

[See also the Pain Services page on the Nuffield Department of Anaesthetics website]

Anaesthetists make a major contribution to pain management in hospitals throughout the United Kingdom. The management of postoperative pain is an inherent part of anaesthetic practice and in addition anaesthetists provide the medical input to acute pain services that care for patients with non-surgical acute pain. The vast majority of doctors involved in chronic pain services are anaesthetists. Some of them work full time in this field and many also provide care for patients with pain due to cancer.

Pain management features at all levels of the competency based training programme for anaesthetists, and the Pain Management Committee of the Royal College of Anaesthetists has produced guidelines on the provision of advanced training in pain management. Trainees in the Oxford School of Anaesthesia interested in higher training in pain management should contact the Regional Adviser for Pain Management Dr Neil Evans to discuss their individual training objectives.
