Vascular Anaesthesia

The John Radcliffe Hospital is a tertiary referral centre for vascular surgery. Approximately 75 aortic aneurysms, of which 25 are emergency ruptures, are operated on each year, in addition to which there are 100 carotid endarterectomies, most of which are performed with the patient awake, and about the same number of distal limb revascularization procedures. Increasing numbers of patients are undergoing aortic and carotid stenting procedures carried out in the X-ray angiography suite.

Some of the regional anaesthesia techniques for carotid surgery which have become commonplace nationally have been pioneered in Oxford.

An Advanced Training Module in vascular anaesthesia is available.
